The realization of fast and effective fault current limitation is the key to the control and protection technology in DC system. The DC superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) developed by superconducting characteristics has ideal current-limiting performance, which has been widely studied and continuously developed in recent years. The main types and operation principles of the existing high temperature SFCL in DC system are summarized based on the current-limiting effect presented by the superconducting module. The influence of superconducting materials on the current-limiting performance and applicability of SFCL is described. The connection scheme of SFCL in DC system is illustrated. Also, based on the cooperative relationship among DC SFCL, converters and DC circuit breakers, the performance requirements of DC SFCL applied in DC system are refined. The development pattern of DC SFCL is concluded to indicate the future application trends of DC SFCL.
