Over the last decade, advances in computational performance have led to the development of new methods for generating finite element models of spinal vertebrae from image data. This paper reviews the methods used and assesses the likely accuracy of the models generated. The model predictions will be influenced by the mesh density and generation method, the material property assignation and the applied boundary conditions. Each of these factors is considered and their relative contribution to the model errors are discussed.
